Families usually call me when one of these is true.

You've had news, and you want to plan while there's time.

You're caring for a parent and need someone beside you.

The end is near, and the family wants to be ready.

Someone has died, and you don't know what comes next.

A cup of tea on a windowsill, fog in the cedars outside.

What a doula does

The steady person in the room.

An end-of-life doula looks after everything around a death that isn't medical: the conversations, the plans, the people, the practical steps, and the quiet hours.

I'm not a nurse or a counsellor, and I never replace your care team. I work beside them, so you have time to be a daughter, a husband, a friend.

How I help

Three kinds of support.

Hands writing a letter at a wooden table.

Planning ahead

Wishes written down, the hard conversations had kindly, and letters or recordings for the people you'll leave.

An armchair with a blanket by a window, a small lamp lit.

Keeping vigil

The room the way you want it: music or quiet, who sits when, and someone steady through the nights so the family can rest.

Pale garden roses in coastal fog.

After a death

The first hours and calls, the practical steps, and visits in the weeks after, for as long as they help.

About Jo

Why I do this.

I sat with my grandmother through her last week. What I remember most is how much the family needed someone who wasn't afraid of the room.

I trained as an end-of-life doula in 2017 and have supported families across North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Deep Cove since. I belong to the provincial doula association and carry liability insurance.

From families

In their words.

“She never hurried us. She helped the children decide what they wanted to say at Qingming, and she remembered Wei's birthday when I had lost track of the days.”Lin C., Steveston
“My mother wanted music in the room and her sisters' rosary, and Jo made both happen without any fuss. She knew when to leave the room.”Lucia D., East Vancouver

Questions

What families ask first.

Are you medical?

No. I don't give medical advice or care. I work alongside your doctors, nurses and hospice team, and look after everything else.

Where do you work?

North Vancouver, West Vancouver and Deep Cove, at home or in hospital. Anywhere in BC by video.

What if we only need one visit?

That's fine. Many families start with one conversation. You can book by the hour, and add hours whenever you like.

How do we pay?

By e-Transfer, once we've agreed on what you need. You'll get a simple invoice and a receipt.

Let's talk, whenever you're ready.
